Strong wet westerly

I hung out some washing this morning but the wind was so strong the pegs couldn't hold it, then it started to rain. From around the country there were stories of high winds blowing lorries over and huge waves along the coast. We were deluged during the day so I didn't venture out until late, when the clouds were lined up parallel to the westerly wind. These photos were taken from the same spot, looking in opposite directions.

Simpsons sky

These flat cumulus humilis are known as "Simpsons clouds" by fans of the TV cartoon series, because of their resemblance to the ones that appear at the beginning of the programmes.
These beautiful wisps of fragmented cumulus appeared overhead during the afternoon.

Red sky

The beginning of a beautiful sunset in Ipswich, which turned a deep red on the way home. After so much rain, there were pools of water in the fields.

Pink & grey

Lots of stratocumulus today.

Late wisps

Earlier in the day there was a fleet of cumulus galleons (cumulus mediocris) sailing slowly across the sky, flat-bottomed, in full sail. Alas, I was driving without a camera. By the time I got home, this was all that was left.

After days of blanket greyness, a short break in the clouds.

Not good for depressives

The sort of dull, dark, damp day that encourages melancholia, if you're that way inclined. I'm not. This was evening. The wind made it difficult to stand still and focus.

Dramatic start to the day

Up late playing online Scrabble last night, so I missed this sunrise. Photo courtesy of my neighbour, Roger Horne. Now it's just another grey day.

Wet

A wet day with sunny intervals. Yesterday was grey, so no picture.

Sunny intervals, but not many

There were some more interesting cumulus clouds in the distance, but today was mostly grey, with showers.

West south westerly

As well as the wind, the forecast was "light rain". The wind almost dried my washing before it rained.

Fine day

Mostly blue sky today with just a little bit of altocumulus in the distance.

Bright new day

After two days of unrelieved greyness, Saturday began with gold and blue, and patches of cirrus and cirrocumulus.

Foggy New Year

The year began with ground level cloud, aka "fog".
