St Jude's Storm, 28th October 2013

Was woken just before 8am by beeping electrical equipment triggered by a power cut. This was taken through my window. You can just see a faint rainbow. Doesn't look like much, but it was blowing a gale.

The power cut lasted 54 hours.

High winds

Winds at high altitudes have whipped the cirrus this way and that.

Heavy showers

They've had gale force winds and coastal flooding in the west today. We got off relatively lightly, though I did get soaked going to the Post Office.

Windy day

Very windy so the sky kept changing - there were lots of these.

Strong wet westerly

I hung out some washing this morning but the wind was so strong the pegs couldn't hold it, then it started to rain. From around the country there were stories of high winds blowing lorries over and huge waves along the coast. We were deluged during the day so I didn't venture out until late, when the clouds were lined up parallel to the westerly wind. These photos were taken from the same spot, looking in opposite directions.

Wet and windy

Rained all day. This is the wind blowing through the eucalyptus tree in next door's garden.

Hook

This was taken as the sun was setting. The cirrus cloud formed that odd shape as it precipitated - the ice crystals started to fall but were swept along by high winds at a lower altitude.
