Looking south-east

Looking south-east, originally uploaded by Sparrows' Friend.
Cold sunshine, clouds over the coast.

Sudden darkness

Noticed it had gone dark and looked out of the window as this bank of cloud arrived overhead, moving south east at speed. The sky was soon completely covered.

A scattering

Cumulus humilis and mediocris scattered across the sky, late afternoon. No precipitation.

Clumpy cumulus

There were some clumpy cumulus clouds around from mid-afternoon. Towards sunset, one looked like a big fat fish.

Rain again

It was the wettest April for ages, and it's still wet. I'm not complaining; the water table badly needed a top up.

A drive through the rain

Went cloud-chasing in the car as it rained. The rape is flowering now, so there are splashes of yellow in the landscape but it was dulled by dark skies yesterday afternoon.

Lots more rain

Stupidly went out without my camera this afternoon. On the way back from Sudbury I saw some lovely clouds in the bright sunshine between showers. Took this looking north-west from Aldham Street later, after posting a letter. By this time, the skies had settled down. The lush green crop shows the rain has done some good.

More biggies

A big hairy monster, bringing more rain.

Late light

In the evening I noticed a bright light through the hall window, and found it was reflected off a wall of cumulus to the south east, seen through a gap in the nimbostratus that covered the sky. It's been another wet day.

Friday, 20 April 2012

Sunshine and showers

Kept seeing glimpses of towers like these through a sheet of nimbostratus.
Looking east, there's just a patch of blue sky showing through.
Was tempted to get the car out and go to get a better view of these, but changed my mind when I started to get wet. This is our village hall.
 Looking west.
Rain coming my way.

Lines in different colours

At about six o'clock, there were rolling lines of cumulus mediocris, blown that way by the wind.
As the sun set, straggly streaks of stratocumulus were formed by the flattening cumulus clouds, tinted by the setting sun.

Rain, mostly

We needed rain, and lots of it. Towards the end of the day the sun broke through and illuminated the ash tree.

Wednesday, 11 April 2012

Cloud build-up

Lots of cloud activity today, with cumulus congestus building up in the sunshine.

For a while, there was a mixture of cirrus, contrails, and a few puffs of cumulus mediocris.
Then a build-up of cumulus clouds, like this cloud mountain.
It looked like they were already having rain to the south east.
Forms were changing fast.
The mountain peak was overtaken by a cumulonimbus capillatus (with the fringe on the top).

Grey day

Not much happening today. Dull weekend.

Tuesday, 3 April 2012

Looks like rain

Just after 7pm. So far, only a few spots. Hoping there'll be more tonight.

Monday, 2 April 2012

Duck with cumulus fractus

He was looking for his girlfriend, who was playing hard to get.

Rain is forecast for tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it.

Sunday, 1 April 2012

Almost invisible moon

Mid-afternoon, and more blue sky with just a thin trace of cirrus so you could hardly see the moon, but it's there. Please let it rain soon!

Friday, 30 March 2012

Misty sun

It was overcast and misty as the sun set.

Monday, 19 March 2012

Cumulus fractus

Lots of these around today, which was bright and sunny.

After the rain

Masses of rain over the last few days, which was good. We needed it. This afternoon, fast-moving cumulus mediocris tinted by the setting sun.

Sunday, 26 February 2012

Sunshine and shadow

The sun played hide and seek all afternoon. There seemed to be a pinkish tint on some clouds - an optical illusion, though not as dramatic as the iridescence I photographed in July 2008.

Sunday, 19 February 2012

Fair weather clouds

A fine dry day, not too cold, no precipitation. This was taken looking east, with a wind evidently blowing the clouds north - or south?

Monday, 13 February 2012

Slowly clearing

The day began with mist and frost. The sky was mostly stratus, then it started to break up in the afternoon.

Friday, 10 February 2012

Sun, setting

A quick blaze before it retires. Almost cloudless, apart from a few contrails and scraps of stratocumulus.

Thursday, 9 February 2012

More snow forecast

The temperature had crept up a bit earlier in the day but by the time this was taken (late afternoon) it was down to just under 0° again.

Monday, 6 February 2012

Sunday, 5 February 2012

Snow

To hear the news, you'd think we'd never had snow before. This is what it looked like late afternoon today - complete cloud cover, and starting to get misty.

Friday, 27 January 2012

Blue sky

Hazy blue sky with some cumulus in the distance (to the east). Weather forecasters say it'll get colder.

Thursday, 26 January 2012

Cold westerly wind

There was a cold wind from the west as a bunch of cumulonimbus passed overhead mid-afternoon. After 10-15 minutes, they'd moved on and the sky above was clear.
